Softdrink Can Cause Cancer?

Warning to you the soda enthusiasts. A recent study says, those who drank two cans of softdrink or more drinks containing sugar risk of pancreatic cancer. Although this cancer cases rare but deadly cancer of the pancreas included.

Although both contain sugar, the cancer risk was not found in fruit juice beverage enthusiasts. Chief researcher, Mark Pereira of the University of Minnesota, United States, argued the sugar could be culprit of disease, but enthusiasts may have a softdrink unhealthy lifestyle.

“High levels of sugar in soft drinks may increase the levels of insulin in the body that we believe led to the growth of cancer cells,” said Pereira. Insulin, which helps the body regulate glucose produced in the pancreas.

A total of 60,000 men and women respondents in Singapore to research done this for 14 years. During this period 140 of the respondents suffered from pancreatic cancer. Those who drank two or more cans of softdrink every week has a 87 percent risk was higher in pancreatic cancer patients.

Although conducted in a small country, but Pereira said the results of this study can be applied in other countries. “Singapore is a rich country with a good health system. Penchant population is eating and shopping, so that the results of this research can also be used by residents in Western countries,” he said.

Susan Mayne of the Yale Cancer Center of Yale University, USA, gave a different view on the results of this study. “The conclusion is made on a small sample of cases and it is unclear whether there is a causal relationship,” he said.

Mayne said, cancer is caused by multifaktor, not to mention just one factor. “The high softdrink consumption in Singapore is also followed by other bad habits such as smoking and eating meat,” he said. Some literature states pancreatic cancer associated with consumption of red meat.
